The twelve 9th week matches of the SLC Major League Tournament 2022 concluded today (16th October) with no games producing results. In fact, a grand total of only 3 overs were possible in the first two days due to persistent rains before there was some play on the final day. Still, two games had to be abandoned with no play at all.
Being the only game that had some overs of play before the final day, the game between BRC and Sebastianites C & AC at BRC grounds saw the home side’s opening pair making some valuable runs for their side after they had faced 5 consecutive outright defeats in their previous games. BRC’s wicket-keeper batter Leo Fransisco went on to record his second ton of the tournament while Sebastianites’ leg-spinning all-rounder Tharusha Fernando claimed his maiden 5-wicket haul in First Class cricket with figures of 7/92. The highlight of the Sebastianites innings was big-hitting all-rounder Sachitha Jayatilake’s 23-ball 51 which had 2 fours and 6 sixes.
>> Just three overs allowed on day 2 of week 9
In the other games, Police SC’s Heshan Dhanushka scored his 4th century of the season against Lankan CC while the in-form spinner Prabath Jayasuriya registered his 6th 5-wicket haul of the tournament against Kandy Customs CC.
The games in Galle and Maggona were completely washed out without a single ball being bowled in the 3 days.

In Group B, luckily there were no complete washouts. The game between Army SC and Navy SC in Welisara saw the visiting team almost completing a stunning outright win within just a day. However, they were short of 7 wickets when the game ended with the hosts still 154 runs behind. For Army, skipper Lakshan Edirisinghe and wicket-keeper Mahesh Kumara put on an unbeaten 206-run 5th wicket stand as both scored centuries to help them put a competitive 271/4d on the board for the first innings. Then the tournament’s highest wicket-taker left-arm spinner Kaumal Nanayakkara claimed his 9th 5-wicket haul of the tournament to bundle out Navy for just 106 in their second innings. The Navy was reeling at 11 for 3 when the game came to an end.
Sri Lanka Test cap Oshada Fernando scored his first century of the tournament for Ace Capital CC against Badureliya SC while Tamil Union C & AC’s all-rounder Ravindu Fernando claimed his maiden 5-wicket haul in First Class cricket against Bloomfield C & AC.
The game between Chilaw Marians CC and Air Force SC at the R. Premadasa International Stadium saw the Airmen making an interesting move by giving a ball to every member of the playing XI. All eleven team members including wicket-keeper Udayawansha Parakrama, who had never bowled in his professional cricket career thus far, had a go at the Chilaw Marians batters as they ended the day on 292 for 6.
