Nine matches of SLC Major Clubs 50 Over Tournament 2023/24 worked off today (28th December) at several venues across the island.
National-capped left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya’s brilliant spell helped Nondescripts Cricket Club register their second tournament win, defeating Army Sports Club in their backyard.
Embuldeniya picked up 5 wickets for 43 runs to restrict the Army batting lineup to 163 runs. NCC cruised to the target of 164 runs in 25.1 overs with 4 wickets in hand thanks to Pathum Nissanka’s blistering knock at the top of the order.
Nissanka top scored for NCC with 73 runs off 43 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 169.76. Army skipper Seekkuge Prasanna fought hard with the ball, snaring 5 wickets for 47 runs in a losing cause.
The opening batter Vishva Chathuranga, stroked a magnificent century as Chilaw Marians Cricket Club recorded a massive win over Panadura Sports Club today at Panadura.
Chathuranga hit 112 runs off 93 balls with 11 fours and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 120.43, helping Chilaw Marians post a solid total – 281 on the board.
In reply, Panadura SC batters were knocked over for just 137 runs as Thikshila de Silva and Irushka Thimira demolished the opposition batting lineup, grabbing 4 wickets each.
Sinhalese Sports Club suffered their first loss of the tournament at the hands of Bloomfield Cricket & Athletic Club as they went down fighting in a rain-affected encounter at Bloomfield Grounds.
Though SSC managed to restrict Bloomfield’s batting lineup to a chaseable total – of 168 thanks to the heroics with the ball by spin twins Prabath Jayasuriya (5/21) and Charith Asalanka (4/35), who shared 9 wickets between them, the visitors faltered with the bat falling 19 runs short of the revised DLS target.
