Six games of the Major Clubs T20 Tournament were played today (8th June) in Colombo, with all chasing teams recording wins.
Lakshan Gamage of Army SC bamboozled the Kurunegala YCC top-order as the right-arm seamer picked up 2 quick wickets in his first 2 overs, leaving the opposition stranded on 12 for 2. He then came back in his second spell at the death, picking up 2 more wickets in the 20th over. The youngster was well supported by his senior bowler, Yasoda Mendis who also accounted for 4 scalps in the game.
This pair’s terrific bowling performance left the Kurunegala team in grave trouble as they managed only 88 runs. The soldiers chased it down with not too much trouble.
Another bowler who had an outstanding day in the field was the ambidextrous spinner, Tharindu Rathnayake. Rathnayake, playing for Sebastianites CAC, unsettled the Kandy Customs CC batters as the spinner ended with 4 wickets for just 8 runs with a maiden included.
NCC played Panadura SC today which ended in the latter’s favour. Yet, it was Sandun Weerakkody of NCC who happened to be the most exciting player in the game.
The left-handed opener scored a fighting fifty while the rest of his team was struggling. His 53 off 46 deliveries proved vital as NCC only had 118 runs on board. Quite surprisingly, Weerakkody, who is a wicketkeeper by the norm, came out with the ball in hand and picked 4 wickets at the death for NCC. His efforts did manage to push this chase to the 19th over, but could not end it on the positive side.
Young Ravindu Rashantha of Colombo Colts CC also played an impressive innings today as Colts defeated Negombo CC by 4 wickets. Rashantha made a gutsy 46 off 39 deliveries with 3 big sixers included in his knock.
