Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), with the blessing of the Government of Sri Lanka, have taken the early steps to build another International Cricket Stadium in Homagama.
This new Stadium, capable of hosting day/night games, will be able to hold 40,000 spectators and will be the biggest stadium in the country. Currently, the main three Cricket Stadiums, Khettarama, Pallekelle and Hambanthota can accommodate up to 35,000 spectators.
SLC to spend 100 million to build International Stadium in Jaffna
The Government of Sri Lanka is expected to grant a land of 28-acres to Sri Lanka Cricket to build this ground. Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva during a site visit on Sunday (17th May) expressed his views on the proposed new Stadium. “We’re hoping to host a few ICC events from the 2023 to 2030 cycle. So that’s why we’re building this Stadium. It will cost us up to USD 30 to 40 Million. We will seek a concessionary loan of USD 15 Million from ICC to build this Stadium.” He said.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced in 2017 plans to build two new stadiums in Jaffna and Polonnaruwa but none of the work has been completed yet, while last November, building of another proposed stadium in Padukka was also announced.
SLC and SLT join hands to construct new cricket ground
The announcement has drawn much criticism, with former Sri Lanka captain, Mahela Jayawardene, tweeting “We don’t even play enough international cricket or domestic first-class cricket in the existing stadiums we have … Do we need another one?”.
