The Sri Lanka Under-16 girls’ team, taking part in the Junior Fed Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Pre-Qualifying Event, sponsored by BNP Paribas, in Kuching, Malaysia, entered the Zonal Final Qualifiers on Thursday.
The team comprising Medhira Samarasinghe, Nethmi Waduge and Hasindhi Lokuge beat Iran, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan without dropping a set to book a berth with the other seeded nation in the tournament, Kazakhstan, to fight for the top spot on Friday, the final day of the competition.
Both Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan have already assured a place at the Final Qualifying event, to be played at the same venue, from May 5 – 10, the ITF reported on Thursday.
Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Under-14 girls’ and boys’ teams taking part in the World Junior Tournament, being held concurrently at the same venue, have failed to get into the Final Qualifying Round from these Pre-Qualifiers.
