The Sri Lankan Cadet Officer contingent that took part in the World Military Cadet Games, held in Ecuador, returned home having created a milestone in Sri Lanka’s defence services sports.
With an impressive performance that retained consistent improvement in each attempt allocated to him, Officer Cadet K. D. S. Perera won the silver medal in the shot put event, bringing credit to the motherland.
Twenty-six countries participated in the multi-disciplined sports event which drew to a close on September 5. The Games offered them the opportunity of exchanging military training concepts. Knowing programmes of other military academies pave the way for becoming better cadets, better soldiers and better military leaders.
A contingent of 23 Sri Lankan Officer Cadets took part in this mega event, which is conducted every two years to promote world peace by establishing friendship through sport. They met the President of the Defence Services Sports Board, Vice Admiral Jayantha Perera at the Naval Headquarters and received his blessings prior to their departure for Ecuador where the 2nd World Military Cadet Games was held. The Officer Cadets representing Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force competed in athletics, swimming and shooting, showcasing their sporting talents at the mega sports event organised under the auspices of the International Military Sports Council (CISM). They were able to meet Cadet Officers belonging to different militaries in the world and exchange views promoting solidarity and world peace.
The 2nd CISM World Military Cadet Games commenced on August 30 in Salinas, Ecuador, with the participation of the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Ecuador, Maria Fernando Espinoza, gracing the occasion as the chief guest. Minister of Sports and Recreations, S. R. Jose Frasisco, President of the Ecuadorian Military Sports Federation, Vice Admiral Carlos Moncayo Cacereevallos and many senior dignitaries, representing International Defence Forces, were also present at the colourful opening ceremony where world military cadet contingents paraded flying the national flags high, proudly announcing their presence.
