Inoka Ranaweera starred in another thumping 8 wicket win for the Lankan Women’s cricket team against Zimbabwe in their 3rd game of the Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Colombo.
After having faced defeat in their 1st encounter of the tournament, at the hands of favourites India, Sri Lanka came back strongly against Ireland and continued their form in the game against Zimbabwe earlier today.
Batting 1st Zimbabwe managed just 149 all out in their 50 overs as they struggled to get going with the bat. The opening pair of L Tshuna and M Mupachikwa managed to bat out 13.3 overs however, managed just 30 runs during
that time, putting Zimbabwe on the back foot right from the get go. Udeshika Prabodhini was characteristically economical opening the bowling while the other bowlers managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals. Zimbabwe never looked like cutting lose and ultimately were bowled out off the last ball of the innings for a meager 149.
Captain Ranaweera picked up 4 wickets for just 18 runs in her 10 overs while Chamari Polgampola and Chamari Atapattu picked up 2 wickets a piece.
Coming into bat for the chase, the host’s openers Nipuni Hansika and Atapattu put on 77 for the 1st wicket in just over 15 overs to put Sri Lanka firmly in control of the game. Atapattu was dismissed for a blistering 58 off 60 deliveries but Hansika, Polgampola and Prasadining all made decent scores to carry Sri Lanka home with more than 13 overs to spare.
L Tshuma was the only one who seemed to trouble the batters, claiming both wickets to fall.
With two wins out of three games, Sri Lanka are almost assured to make it to the Super 6 Stage and will face Thailand in their last Group game on Monday.
