Singapore outclass Sri Lanka - Netball World Cup 2023

A disciplined Singapore side defeated their Asian rivals Sri Lanka 52-55 in a Pool E game in the Netball World Cup 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Singapore got off to a fast start, leading 0-3 in just over a minute, a lead which they would not concede in the 1st quarter. A 0-4 scoring run saw the lead extend to 8-15 and then 9-18. Sri Lanka had 6 general play turnovers including 4 intercept passes, while Singapore had none. The 1st quarter ended with Singapore leading 10-19.

Sri Lanka needed to change things around as they brought in Thishala Algama to replace Tharjini Sivalingam. The impact of the change was evident as Sri Lanka started to flow freely. By the 4th minute of the 2nd quarter, they made it 15-22. Two 5-0 runs in the later stages of the quarter saw Sri Lanka take the score from 17-25 to 22-25, and eventually to the lead 27-26 at Half Time.

Sri Lanka outscored their opponents 17-7. Sri Lanka only had only three turnovers and 2 intercept passes while they forced Singapore into 7 turnovers and 3 intercept passes.

Till midway through the 3rd quarter, Sri Lanka had a 35-32 lead. However, mistakes saw Singapore go on a 0-5 run and regain the lead at 35-37. They went onto end the quarter at 40-42 (13-16).

Sri Lanka brought back Sivalingam and equalized the scores at 44-44. Singapore once again took a 3-goal lead, and Sri Lanka once more fought back to make it 49-49. However, a 0-3 run at the end proved too much for Sri Lanka as they went down 52-55 to a very disciplined Singapore outfit.
