Shashank Manohar has stepped down as ICC Chairman after four years. The ICC Board met on Wednesday (July 1) and Imran Khwaja, the deputy chairman, has been appointed to serve as the interim chairman till Manohar’s successor is finalised by next week.

“On behalf of the ICC Board and staff and the whole cricket family, I would like to thank Shashank for his leadership and everything he has done for the sport as ICC Chairman. We wish him and his family all the very best for the future,” ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney.

Manohar rose to the ICC chairmanship in 2016, when he was elected unopposed, and went on to claim a second term in 2018 in similar fashion. In the first two years in office, Manohar oversaw changes to ICC’s governance structure and financial model, despite strong opposition from BCCI. When it was time for the election in 2018, Manohar’s candidature was the only one put forth by the directors at ICC.

“Everyone on the ICC Board extends their wholehearted thanks to Shashank for the commitment he has shown to our sport. There is no doubt that cricket owes Shashank a debt of gratitude for all he has done for the sport. He has left cricket and the ICC in a better place than he found it,” Khwaja said.

With Manohar ending his stint, Colin Graves, who has already announced that his tenure as ECB chairman will end on August 3, is among the front-runners for the seat. As reported earlier by Cricbuzz, there’s another suitor vying to be ICC chairman. Chris Nenzani, the CSA president, politely cited ICC protocols and those of his own board while sidestepping Graeme Smith’s recommendation.

As per the ICC constitution, one of the current directors in the board or a former director (who has not occupied the position for six or more years) qualifies to contest for the position of the chairman, if proposed by any of the Member Nations
