Twenty-year-old Tennis prodigy Sharmal Dissanayake registered his name in the national title leaderboard as he went on to secure his first Men’ Singles national title this evening defeating Yasitha De Silva in a close encounter at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) courts this evening.
The SLTA courts opened up for the final day in the 2016 national championship run as the highly anticipated Men’ Singles finals was staged in the center court.
The Davis Cup player Sharmal met his teammate Yasitha De Silva in the finals of the Men’s Open Singles and after an encounter lasting for over two hours, it was Sharmal who emerged as the winner for the year 2016.
It was a closely contested first set where but Dissanayake took early honours to register a 6-2 win. Fighting back, Yasitha went up 3 games ahead of Sharmal and slowly made his way to a 6-4 set win to make it even.
However, it was the former Royalist Sharmal who dominated the next two sets to win them 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the national title. This will be Sharmal’s first national title and it was an impressive stint by him to win this encounter having ended runner-up in last year’s final against Dineshkanthan Thangarajah.
Yasitha De Silva will take the runner-up honours in this year’s competition and in third place will be Heera Ashiq and Sanka Atukorale.
