Seven of the best from the Dialog Club Rugby 7’s

The past few weeks saw the Dialog Club Rugby 7’s return as the 2018/19 Club rugby league nears. Who were the outstanding seven players over the two legs? Let’s have a look!

The highest try scorer of the tournament over the two legs, Kasun Suranga stood out beating all others to the covered prize. Break after break yielded try and try for the youngster as he ended the two legs with 19 tries to his name. Fellow team mates Janith Chanaka and rising star Sachith Silva – Highest try scorer from schools’ league 2017 – provided Suranga with supreme support as the Cops went on to end the first leg as runners up even though they failed to live up to the billing in the second leg.

Current Sri Lanka 7’s star, Sudam Sooriyarchchi lit up the tournament with his sniping breaks and scintillatingly quick feet. The halfback would feel hard done to miss out on further accolades at the tournament, however, a team man will be delighted to finish the tournament as champions for his new club CH & FC.

A main stay in the centre of the field for Navy Sports Club, Lahiru Herath was a lone figure fighting for the defending champion. Navy failed to defend their crown, however, the monstrous centre played a monumental role for the Sailors. His ability to play at either prop or centre in the shorter format came in handy time and time gain as he lit up proceedings in the Navy jumper.

Continuing his stay at Welisara, Adeesha Weerasinghe continued his growth following a fruitful year. In a season with national accolades, the youngster did no harm to his chances for the upcoming Asian Games with some marvelous performances out over the two legs.

Former Le-Blue five-eighth and current Air Force representee, Ishara Madushan was one of the reasons why the Airman from Rathmalana came ever so close to beating eventual champions CH & FC. The 24 year-old’s towering restarts and ability with ball in hand played a huge role in leading the Air Force lads to a second place finish.

Highest try scorer from the first leg, Naveen Henakankanamge continued on his merry way taking his team all the way to the final. The youngster who got on board with CH & FC for the upcoming season did his chances no harm with some sparkling performances in his first outing for his club. With so much talent at his disposal, it will be interesting to see what sort of role the youngster plays during the 2018/19 Dialog Club Rugby season.

After bursting on to the scene following an exceptional schools’ season, Avantha Lee, continued to impress with some strong performances for the CH & FC B outfit. It was a surprising move to stick the youngster in the second side, however, his performance justified his clams to be running out for the A team.

Meanwhile, Omalka Gunaratne along with CR & FC captain, Kavindu Perera misses out from the best seven while Kandy Sports Club’s Danushka Ranjan also failed to make the cut due to only participating in one leg of the tournament.
