In a bid to get back to international cricket banned off spinner Sachithra Senanayake is traveling to Perth, Western Australia this weekend.
“Sachithra has undergone some remedial work with our spin coach (Piyal Wijetunge). Now we need to assess the degree of flexion in his bowling hand before he faces further tests. To do that we don’t have the necessary equipment here,” a cricket official told Ceylon Today.
Senanayake was banned by the ICC last month after he was booked while playing in England. To clear his name Senanayake needs to face a fresh test at the lab in Cardiff where he was initially tested.
Senanayake, 29, who is considered a key player in the Sri Lankan side, is attempting to be ready for the World Cup in early next year. In Perth he is scheduled to work with Daryl Foster, a human movement specialist, who worked with Muttiah Muralitharan.
SLC’s head of coaching Jerome Jayaratne will accompany Senanayake.
Wijetunge to stay
Meanwhile, spin bowling coach Piyal Wijetunge has decided against joining Bangladesh. SLC’s executive committee has successfully negotiated with Wijetunge and it is understood that he has been offered a considerable raise in his salary.
Wijetunge who counts nearly ten years with SLC’s coaching setup, was offered a role in the Bangladesh coaching unit headed by Chandika Hathurusinghe for a lucrative salary of close to 10000 US dollars.
