Seethadevi and Aloysius claim National Schools’ Games Hockey titles

The 33rd National Schools’ Games Hockey Championship concluded successfully at the Astro Turf yesterday with Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy and St. Aloysius College, Galle coming out on top in the Girls’ and Boys’ championships respectively.

Janadipthipathi Balika Vidyalaya, Nawala finished as runners up in the Girls’ championship while Sri Sumangala Balika Vidyala managed to grab 3rd place. In the Boys’ category, Nalanda College, Colombo finished 2nd best to St Aloysius while third place was secured by S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia.

Seethadevi Vidyalaya took on Janadipathi Balika in the final of the Girl’ category and dominated possession throughout the game to claim a 1-0 win. Janadipathi failed to score via their penalty corners throughout the match and this enabled Seethadevi to grab the U20 title once again. The winning goal was scored by D.R. Rajapakse.

Sri Sumangala Balika Vidayalaya Panadura beat St. Anthony’s Convent, Kandy in the 3rd place playoff to claim the 2nd runners up position. Dinara Nethimini Sumangala scored the winning goal in the 36th minute to give them a 1-0 win.

In the Boys’ category final St. Aloysius Galle beat Nalanda College, Colombo with a scoreline of 2-1. Thiran and Dilmitha scored one goal each for the Aloysius team while Bodhika Dias pulled one back for the Nalandians. Nalanda had terrible luck with their penalty corners and long corners throughout the match. Aloysius used the entire court and maintained a balanced defensive and offensive game  to help them claim the win.

S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia took on Joseph Vaz in the 3rd place playoff. It was an easy win for Thomians as the Joseph Vaz players struggled to settle into the game. The final score read 4-0.
