The Science College second row player, Santhush Ayeshmantha suffered a heavy blow to the head during the match that involved St. Anthony’s and Science College that was played yesterday (22nd) at Nittawela. He is said to be recovering from the injury.
The incident occurred in the Plate encounter that took place in Kandy in the final week of the championship. The 17-year-old Santhush Ayeshmantha who was playing the second row for Science College suffered a blow to his head when he collided with a player of the same team going for the ball.
With the injury, the team staff had taken measures to take only one of the players out while the Santhush has continued to play. This resulted in him in falling down unconscious during play and was later stretchered off for treatment.

Speaking to ThePapare, master-in-charge of Science College A. S. Jayasooriya said “yesterday I was informed that he was taken to surgery right away after the incident. The initial reports suggested it was internal bleeding.”
“The parents of the student were sent to Kandy last night and he is currently under observation at the General Hospital in Kandy.”
“We saw the collision and took one player out and did not send him back in because he showed signs of concussion but he (Santhush) continued to play.”
While his condition is turning to a favourable condition, a final verdict on his condition will come in 24 hours.
Had the medical and support staff taken proper measures during the game, the player’s life wouldn’t have been put in such a risky situation.
We wish Santhush a speedy recovery and hope this stands as a deterrent with more stringent measures taken to assess concussion at such times in the future.
