SC VS SSCK DSRL 2024

Science College hosted Sri Sumangala College behind closed doors at the Police Park Grounds yesterday (14th of July) and registered a comfortable 41-12 victory.

The game began with both teams making a lot of errors, especially at lineouts. However, the home team finally drew first blood when Oshadha Perera managed to break away from the midfield defenders and gave a perfectly timed offload out to Methuka Edirisinghe, who went over. The first conversion of the day from Perera went astray. (SC 05 – 00 SSCK)

Anuradha Lakshan, along with the Science College forwards, joined the action a few minutes later, when they started a rolling maul from the halfway mark and almost reached the 22m line of the opposition. Sri Sumangala College conceded a penalty a few phases later and the home team sSkipper Anuradha Lakshan took it quickly and went over easily. Once again, the conversion was unsuccessful for Science College. (SC 10 – 00 SSCK)

The visitors scored their first try of the game after Science made too many errors inside their own half and conceded a penalty just a few metres short of their own whitewash. The Summa boys who took a quick tap, scored the try off the first receiver Yasiru Rathnayake. Adeel Mohammed, with a successful conversion, managed to put his team in close distance with the opponents. (SC 10 – 07 SSCK)

Just a few minutes before the Half Time whistle, Minula Abedheera went over for the 3rd try for the hosts from the right corner as they finally found a try after playing a lot of Rugby inside the opposition 22m territory. Perera kicked through his first successful conversion of the day to increase the lead further going into half Time. (SC 17 – 07 SSCK)

Half Time: Science College 17 – 07 Sri Sumangala College

Science College started the second half with a bang when Mohammad Shabeer scored the 4th try after a phenomenal individual effort, where he fended off a tackler and outran the remaining defenders to go all the way. However, the accuracy in converting the try was off once again from Perera. (SC 22 – 07 SSCK)

Kaveesha Ranthula went over for the next try after Perera ran right through the heart of the defence after selling a dummy and took them close before Ranthula went over. Skipper, who opted to go for the conversion, unfortunately ran out of time. (SC 27 – 07 SSCK)

The try of the game was scored next by Perera, who did a lot of hard work in the game and finally managed to put his name on the try scorers list. This was basically a one man show from the talismanic player of Science College as he stepped in and out at will, disrupting the whole defensive setup of the visitors. He ran for at least 60 metres to touchdown and then converted the try himself. (SC 34 – 07 SSCK)

Minula Abedheera scored the final try of the day for Science College after breaking the Sumangala line of defence with a lovely step inside quite easily. Perera converted the try to take his team into the 40s. (SC 41 – 07 SSCK)

Just before the Full Time whistle, the visitors managed to score a Consolation try as Pasindu Samarakoon went over. (SC 41 – 12 SSCK)

Science College will be extremely happy about this performance as this win will put their campaign back on track. Due to some of the other results in their group this week, they still have an opportunity of qualifying for the super round, but they will have to depend on some other teams as well. Sri Sumangala College will be pleased with the effort in the first half, but they unfortunately did not have enough gas to perform at that level for the whole duration of 70 minutes.

Oshadha Perera had a tremendous game for Science College, scoring 11 points which included a try and three conversions. He also played a pivotal role in some of the other tries his team scored, showcasing some brilliant footwork and speed. Due to this phenomenal effort, he was adjudged NDB Bank Player of the Match.
