Schools Rugby League – Another scorching week ahead

155

The Singer Schools Rugby League which was scheduled to commence a second week with Isipathana taking on D S Senanayake has been postponed to 31st March with a the venue moving to Royal Complex.

Isipathana College who had to fight till the very end to earn a hard fought victory will be at more ease against DSS after they suffered a thrashing at the hands of Trinity College. The pathanians will go for maximum points and make it two out of two and keep their 100% record in tag.

Therefore the first encounters for the week happen up in Kandy with pre-tournament favorites Trinity College hosting to St Joseph College at Pallekelle on Saturday and Kingswood go up against arch-rivals Dharmaraja. Trinity/Joes encounter is pitted to be the match of the week with both teams recorded good wins in their last week fixtures. The Lions will start favorites in this encounter as they will be playing in front of their ardent and supportive home fans. The Joes who will have the travel factor to contend with are no pushovers and under the guidance of coach Leonard de Zilwa who has a club-double under his belt having taken Navy SC to scintillating heights, are sure to prepare spicy fare for the Kandy lads.  At Bogambara the same evening, buoyed by their super performance against St’Peter’s College which ended in a 14-all draw, the Kings will go all out to maintain their unbeaten record. The defending champions will certainly look to  avenge their shocking defeat against the Thomians in Kandy last week.

On Sunday there will be three matches in Colombo with the best unfolding at Science grounds between Science College and St’ Peter’s College. Both teams are unbeaten and Science will fancy their chances considering the Peterite below par performance last week. At Havelock grounds, S Thomas’ will host St Anthonys College who were well beaten by Science in the previous week. The Blue and Black Jersey have made their intentions clear to other schools that they are worthy contenders for the league. They will go all out and make it two wins in a row.

The Royal College vs Wesley College game will be worked off at Royal grounds. Both teams suffered defeats in their last week fixtures. Royal should be able to pull this through considering how close they came in  sight of victory.  With only four top schools from each group qualifying for the Cup Competition in Round two, it’s a titanic battle amongst the best schools in the country.

Isipathana who come up against D S Senanayake is expected to sail through on their game re-scheduled for the 31st March 2014.
