After the first week of the Singer Schools’ Rugby League in the Plate title hunt, Science College and St. Anthony’s College head the leaderboard, remaining undefeated in the segment.
Four interesting clashes took place over the week on par with the Cup championship, starting off with Lumbini College hosting Science College, D. S. Senanayake College playing against Prince of Wales, Kingswood playing host to Dharmaraja and St. Anthony’s confronting Vidyartha.
The first encounter Lumbini vs Science, saw the Science lads running away with an easy victory at CR & FC with the final score-line reading 39-18. The 39 points that were scored by Science consisted of 7 tries and 2 conversions while Lumbini was only able to get 2 tries, a conversion and a penalty.

The encounter where D. S. Senanayake College hosted Prince of Wales College at Welisara was yet again a one sided affair where the Dons ran away with the win. The Prince of Wales team could not get more than a single penalty. Full-time scores read 50 (8T 5C) – 3 (1P).

The Plate action then moved on to Kandy with two exciting clashes in the hill country where the unpredictable Dharmaraja side defeated a strong Kingswood team after a tight contest in the first half. The first 40 minutes of play was an intense competition at Nittawela but the Rajans were able to earn themselves an overwhelming win after 80 minutes.
The Kingswood-Dharmaraja clash was also a trophy game and the Rajans were able to retain the William Weerasinghe trophy for a second successive year.
Full-time score: Dharmaraja 53 (7T 6C 2P) to Kingswood 32 (5T 2C 1P)
The fourth and final match in the 1st week saw St. Anthony’s taking top honours despite the early charge by the Vidyarthians. St. Anthony’s however recovered well in time to get secure footing and take home a comfortable 62-28 win at the conclusion.
After the four clashes in the first week of the Plate title, the points table doesn’t seem to have a major deviation with St. Anthony’s and Science College on top of the list while Dharmaraja and Kingswood fill in the other two positions.
The second week of the Plate Championship is set to commence on the 4th of May.
