School Cricket update: Isipathana begins New Year with 1st innings win

Isipathana College beat Mahanama College in 1st innings to begin the second half of their U19 Division 1 Schools cricket tournament 2014/15.

Isipathana won the toss and elected to bat first on a batting friendly track at  Bloomfield Grounds.

Isipathana College made full use of the toss as they scored a reasonable 212 for their first innings. Middle order batsman Pramod Madhuwantha was the highest scorer as he played a magnificent innings scoring 122 runs, while David Imesha chipped in with 23 runs.

Thivanka Ranasinghe was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 4/35, while fast bowler Subudhi Kaushalya chipped in with 3/35 and Dulanjana Senevirathne 3/51.

Captain Chameera Dissanayake bamboozled the Mahanama batsman with his left arm spin as he bagged 4/37 and Pramod Madhuwantha picked 3/13 as they bowled out Mahanama College for 139 in 67.4 overs of their first innings. Right hand opening batsman Kavindu Munasinghe top scored for Mahanama with 35 and Subudhi Kaushalya chipped in with 33 runs.

Batting in their second innings Isipathana managed 63/4 in 44 overs. Off spiner Dulanjana Senavirathne picked two out of the four wickets to fall in the Isipathana second innings.

Pathum & Chamika score tons at the end of day 1

St. Joseph’s College Captain Pathum Madushanka and Royal College batsman Chamika Karunaratne were unbeaten on 126* and 154* respectively at the end of day 1 in their matches.

Winning the toss and batting first, Wesley displayed a dismal batting performance as they were bowled out for just 99 runs in their first innings. Captain Jonathan Caderamanpulle top scored with a fighting innings of 39 and Andrew Parais managed 21 runs for Wesley.

Making his debut for St. Joseph’s College 1st XI Charuka Raveen made a dream start to his 1st XI career as he picked up 5/33 and fast bowler Jehan Daniel managed to pick 2 wickets for Joes.

Opening the batting for Joes Captain Madushanka hammered and unbeaten 126* while one down batsman Sandruwan Rodrigo scored 58 for Joes. The game will continue tomorrow (6th January) at Maradana St. Joseph’s grounds.

Royal affair

Meanwhile Royal College, Colombo played host to Royal College, Panadura at Royal College grounds, Colombo.

Winning the toss and electing to field Royal College, Panadura had to toil on a flat track. Royal Reid Avenue scored 273/8d in 57 overs as right hand batsman Chamika Karunaratne scored a brilliant 154*. Left hand batsman Randev Pathirana missed his half century as he scored 44, while Geeshanth Panditharathna scored 37. Himesh Ranganath was the only bowler to make an impact for Royal, Panadura as he picked up 3/51.

Batting in their first innings Royal, Panadura scored 99/2 in 33 overs at the end of day one. Right hand opening batsman Hashan Chamara scored 38for Royal, Panadura. The game will continue tomorrow (6th January) at Royal College grounds, Colombo.
