School Cricket Summary: Thurstan and Wesley suffer first-innings defeats

Thurstan College and Wesley College suffered disappointing first-innings defeats at the hands of Nalanda College and Kingswood College respectively on Friday while Dharmaraja College recorded a 9-wicket win over Anuradhapura Central College. 

 

Wesley College vs Kingswood College

Wesley College’s 1st XI cricket season is going from bad to worse as they lost the match on first innings to Kingswood College Kandy. This followed the loss from last week to S. Thomas’ College.

Losing the toss and having been sent into bat on their home ground in Kandy (Police Grounds Kandy) Kingswood College Kandy made full use of the opportunity as they managed to score a reasonable score of 268 all out in 54.5 overs. Vimukthi Wijesiriwardena top scored with 61 while Avishka Chandrasiri chipped in with a valuable 32. Kavinda Senavirathne was the pick of the bowlers for Wesley as he managed 5/52. Charith De Silva managed to chip in with 3 for 91 runs.

Batting in their first innings Wesley College displayed yet another disappointing show with the bat as they could have only managed 190 all out in 66.2 overs. Kavinda Senavirathne was the lone ranger with the bat as he managed more than half of their full total as he scored 109 not out.

Avishka Chandasiri managed to pick 4 wickets while off-spinner Tharindu Liyanage picked 3 wiclets for Kingswood College. Batting in their second innings Kingswood College managed 216 for 9 in 61 overs. Left-handed Purnima Weerasinghe top scored with 90 while Malisha Athulathmudali bagged 5 for 77 as the match drew to an end and KingsWood College winning on 1st innings.

Thurstan College vs Nalanda College 

Nalanda had to be satisfied with first innings points after Thurstan following on made a gallant reply to force a stubborn draw at Thurstan grounds on Friday. 

Earlier on day one, three half-centuries from Aroshan Kumara, Malinga Amarasinghe and Kavindu Bandara helped the visitors amass a mammoth 300 runs on the board before declaring their innings. Dilan Madusanka captured 3 wickets while Nipuna Lakshan gave away only 14 runs for his 2 wickets. 

Thurstan in their first lease of the wicket stumbled against the mighty Nalanda bowling attack as the hosts lost all their wickets with only 114 runs on the board. Skipper Thimira Jayasinghe was the only warrior to battle with a fighting half-ton. Fast-bowler Malinga Amarasinghe and leg-spinner Kavindu Bandara took 4 wickets apiece. 

Patient batting in the 2nd innings saved the face of Thurstan after they posted a staggering 294 for 8 after the visitors enforced the follow-on. Opener Kasun Abeyrathne stroked 70 while Isuru Fernando top-scored with 89. Fast-bowler Malik Peiris took 3 scalps.

Anuradhapura Central College vs Dharmaraja College

Rajans outclassed the new kid on the school cricket arena, Anuradhapura Central College by 9 wickets in their under 19 division one encounter played at Dharmaraja grounds. 

The boys from Anuradhpura faltered badly with the bat as they succumb to the pressure of the hosts. Rajans all-rounder, Ruchira Pupulewatte had a terrific game as he bagged 6 for 67 runs and scored 32 runs. Venuka Galahitiyawa scored 47 and took a match bag of 5 for 60 for the winning team.
