School Cricket Summary: Sammu Ashan shines as Ananda crush Bens

Off-spinner all-rounder Sammu Ashan took a seven-wicket match bag and scored a half-ton as he led Ananda College to a crushing innings and 69-run win over St. Benedict’s College at Ananda Mawatha on Saturday. 

After opting to bat first on Friday, Ananda posted a commanding 289 runs on the board. Three superb half centuries by Sahan Arachchige (73), Sammu Ashan (65) and Nisal Fransisco (52) propelled the Ananda innings. Thulina Dilshan and Navoda Abeysinghe captured 2 wickets apiece for the visitors. 

St. Benedict’s in their first lease of the wicket were bowled out for 127 in just 46.3 overs. The right-handed batsman, Geethika Jayathilake remained unbeaten with a knock of 33 for the visitors. Sammu Ashan grabbed four wickets while Nipun Chamika and Dilanka Sandaken scalped two wickets apiece. 

Ananda enforced the follow-on on St. Benedict’s and they succumbed to the pressure as they were folded for only 79. Left-handed wicket-keeper batsman Janidu Karunathilake was the only player to put up a fighting show with the bat. Fast-bowler Dilanka Sandaken grabbed 6 wickets while Sammu Ashan took 3 scalps.

St. Anthony’s College vs St. Sebastian’s College

St. Anthony’s College claimed first-innings points over St. Sebastian College in their drawn annual cricket fixture concluded at Katugasthota on Saturday.

Sebs batting first was bowled out for 166 runs with off-spinner Nimesh Wanasinghe scalping 7 wickets. Anthonians replied with 233 runs. Kavindu Yapa Bandara slammed a half-ton while left-arm spinner Pramesh Fernando captured another five-wicket haul. With 67 runs behind, the visitors made 191 for the loss of 3 wickets before declaring and setting a target of 125 for the hosts to chase in the final 10 overs and they came close as 99 before umpires called off the play. 

Sandaruwan Fernando and Muditha Fernando cracked half-tons for the visitors in their 2nd innings while opener Kanishka Uggalpaya led the chase with a quick-fire 56 for St. Anthony’s College. Impressive Pramesh Fernando ended the game with an eight-wicket match bag.
