School Cricket Summary – Bens, Petes, Royal, DS and Thora take first day’s honours

Most of the major cricket playing schools in the island took the field on another busy weekend in the under 19 division one tournament 2014/15. After first day’s play on Friday, St. Benedict’s College, St. Peter’s College, Royal College, D.S Senanayake College and S. Thomas’ College took complete control of their respective matches. 

 

St. Benedict’s College vs St. Joseph’s College  

Geethal Fernando and Geethika Jayathilake ripped through the Josephian batting lineup as the hosts were bowled out for a mere 79 runs in their 94th annual cricket encounter played for the Mack-Croner Memorial Trophy at Darley Road. 

Right arm seamer Geethal and off-spinner Geethika shared 7 wickets amongst them to shatter the young and inexperienced Josephian batting unit. The visitors put up 184 runs for 8 wickets at close of play to take full control of the match. Skipper Mahel Jayalath stroked 55 while Suren De Silva and Aravinda Akurugoda grabbed 3 wickets apiece for the home team. 

St. Joseph’s College – 79 all out in 28.3 overs: Vimukthi Peiris 16*, Geethal Fernando 4/26, Geethika Jayathilake 3/13.

St. Benedict’s College – 184/8 in 66 overs: Mahel Jayalath 55, Sithum Wijesinghe 32, Suren De Silva 3/24, Aravinda Akurugoda 3/31. 

 

St. Peter’s College vs St. Anthony’s College

The high-riding Peterite outfit took the first-innings lead at the completion of day one in their match against St. Anthony’s College, Kandy at Bambalapitiya. 

Left-arm spinner Ashanth Malka and seamer Randel Senevirathne captured 2 wickets apiece as Peterites bowled out the visitors for 155. Right-hander Damithra Panditharatne smashed 57 for the visitors. The hosts in their turn were 191 for 5 with opener Dineth Thimodya scoring 72 valuable runs.

St. Anthony’s College – 155 all out in 56.3 overs: Damithra Panditharathne 57, Pulasthi Bandara 43, Ashanth Malka 3/16, Randel Senavirathne 3/22.

St. Peter’s College – 191/5 in 36 overs: Dineth Thimodya 72, Dilan Bandara 2/43.

 

Royal College vs Prince of Wales’ College

The strong Royal batting unit clicked to torment the Prince of Wales bowlers in their match at Moratuwa. 

The openers, Naveen Vidanapathirana and Hasitha Samarasinghe once again put on a hundred plus partnership (4th in the season) on their way to score half-tons as the visitors posted 284 for 5 wickets declared. Right-arm off spinner Savindu Peiris and right-arm seamer Dilanka Maduranga grabbed two wickets apiece. The hosts were 20 for 1 at stumps. 

Royal College – 284/5 declared in 84 overs: Hasitha Samarasinghe 73, Navin Vithanapathirana 54, Geeshanth Panditharatne 70, Savindu Peiris 2/56, Dilanka Maduranga 2/60.

Prince of Wales’ – 20/1 in 10 overs. 

 

S. Thomas’ College vs Trinity College 

Nipuna Gamage’s unbeaten century led S. Thomas’ College to a mammoth 309 for 3 declared in their annual match played for the Ranil Abeynaike Memorial Trophy against Trinity College at Mount Lavinia. 

Left-handed Gamage stroked his 117 runs in 142 balls with 11 fours and a six. Opener Ravindu Sasanka and Chenutha Wickramasinghe chipped in with 52 and 65 respectively. The visitors ended the day strongly on 80 for 1 at close of play. 

S. Thomas’ College – 309/3 declared in 73 overs: Nipuna Gamage 107*, Chenutha Wicramasinghe 65, Ravindu Sasanka 52, Danush Peiris 36*, Raveen Sayer 2/125.

Trinity College – 80/1 in 21 overs: Arjuna Jayasinghe 37, Nushan Weerasinghe 39*. 

 

D.S Senanayake College vs Zahira College

Skipper Harith Maduwantha smashed a stunning ton as D.S Senanayake College amassed 333 in their first innings against Zahira College at Maradana. 

Maduwantha made 114 runs while left-hander Kavin Bandara stroked 60 and Geeth Perera made 70 runs. Spinner Ishan Samsudeen captured 5 wickets for the hosts. Zahira managed to negotiate 4 overs without any loss when the umpires called time on day one. 

DS Senanayake College – 333 all out in 80.1 overs: Harith Maduwantha 114, Kavin Bandara 60, Geeth Perera 70, Ishan Samsudeen 5/102.

Zahira College – 22/0 in 4 overs. 

 

Wesley College vs St. Sebastian’s College

The Sebastanite boys from Moratuwa battled hard for their runs against Wesley College at Campbell Park. 

Left-hander Muditha Fernando top-scored with 69 for the visitors while Kavishka Wickramasinghe and seamer Andrew Parays took 3 wickets apiece for the hosts. 

St. Sebastian’s College – 228/9 in 80 overs: Muditha Fernando 69, Asher Warnakulasuriya 37, Kavishka Wickramasinghe 3/33, Andrew Parais 3/64.
