Sandesh and Thanuri emerge top paddlers at Stag TT Championship

Sandesh Nissanka of Ananda College and Thanuri Gayara of Visakha Vidyalaya impressed many to emerge the most outstanding players at the first ever Stag Western Province Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship, held at the S. Thomas’ indoor stadium last weekend.

 

Sandesh, who has been one of the promising paddlers from Ananda College, showed what he is capable of by winning the boys’ U-15 singles and U-18 titles, while Thanuri Gayara of Visakha Vidyalaya produced a sterling performance to win the girls’ category. She went on to clinch the award presented to the most outstanding player among the girls by winning the Women’s Open Championship singles titles and emerging runner-up in the Under 18 category.

Dewmith Weerasena of Lyceum International Nugegoda was the most promising player in the boys’ division, while Sanaya Buddasasa of Visakha Vidyalaya was the most promising in the girls’ category.

Dewmith Weerasena defeated Thisias Ranchagoda of Royal College 3-0 to win the boys’ U-12 division, while Sanaya Buddadasa defeated Savithri Lochana of Holy Cross College, Gampaha to win the girls’ U-8 division.

Sajith Kavinda of Sri Lanka Army was the Men’s Open champion.

In a unique move, the tournament organizers awarded all participants who made it through to the pre-quarterfinals and upwards with trophies prizes and certificates.
