S.Thomas’ College convincingly defeated Vidyartha College 35 (5T 5C) – 19 (3T 2C) in the second quarter-final of the Dialog Schools Rugby Knockout Tournament 2022 – President’s Trophy game worked off at Havelock Park.
The Thomians brought their form from last week, starting off on a try-scoring note through in-form winger Jaden Koch just two minutes into the game.
Yehan Bulathsinhalage added the extras from a tricky angle, giving the Thomians an early advantage on a cloudy evening at the Park.
Vidyartha struck back straight away as hardworking flanker Umandha Senevirathne managed to crash over. Adithya Ranaweera added the extras as the lads from the hill capital equalized. (STC 07-07 VC)
From then on, the pendulum swung in favor of the Thomians as the bounce of the ball went their way. Reshane Dwight and L. S. Perera scored for S. Thomas’ as Yehan Bulathsinhalage continued on his merry way, keeping his 100% kicking success intact to give them a comfortable 14-point advantage.
Half time: S. Thomas’ College 21 (3T 3C) lead Vidyartha College 07 (1T 1C)
Shamly Nawas asked for more of the same and got exactly what he asked for as the Thomians extended their advantage, shutting out Vidyartha in the meantime.
NDB Player of the Match, Mahith Perera, pulled the strings from the halfback position as he along with Shehan Selvanayagam made it a successful 5-try evening as the game was taken away from the Vidyartha lads. Yehan Bulathsinhalage made no mistake with the extras as he kept his 100% kicking record intact in the game. (STC 35-07 VC)
The lads from the hill capital found a new gear, bringing about an unstructured pattern of play, disrupting the Thomian game, and scoring twice through Nipun Weerasinghe and Deshan Balasooriya.
Menuka Thillakarathe added the extras off one, missing out on the second, to put some respectability on the score line.
S.Thomas’ now has a date set up against unbeaten league champions Isipathana for the semi-final of the Dialog Schools Rugby Knockout Tournament – President’s Trophy.
