S.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia will play Gateway College, Colombo in the 1st ever Neville De Alwis-Ralph Alles Challenge Trophy encounter between the two teams on the 26th January at the new Football grounds at Gateway College, Rathmalana.

The media briefing unveiling the encounter and the challenge trophy was held at the Football House, Colombo with the participation of the Warden of S. Thomas’ College Rev. Marc Billimoria, the Chairman of the Gateway Group Dr. Harsha Alles, President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) Mr. Anura de Silva, the Secretary General Jaswar Umar and several other distinguished guests, members of the staff and the two teams.
This trophy which is named as ‘Neville De Alwis – Ralph Alles Challenge Trophy’ will be played annually unfolding from this year onwards in memory of two legendary and visionary educators and revered mentors to the present day and would mark history as the first such encounter S. Thomas’ College will be playing annually with a reputed International School.
The inaugural encounter will be played at the new Football grounds at Gateway College, Rathmalana starting from the U14 match between the two Colleges which will be followed by an U20 girls’ friendly encounter between Gateway College and Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.

The main event which will be played under lights will kick-off at 6.00pm with the U20 teams of S. Thomas’ College and Gateway College.
The U14 and U20 girls’ matches will be played for 40 minutes; two halves of 20 minutes while the main event will be played for 70 minutes comprising of two halves of 35 minutes.
Players will be rewarded for their individual performances with the joint organizing committee arranging individual awards for the best goalkeeper and the most valuable player from each of the category.
Gateway College emerged champions at the recently concluded U20 Inter International School tournament while S. Thomas’College triumphed over Trinity College, Kandy in their annual Football encounter last year.
Thus, the two teams are evenly matched with technically correct and skilful players who promise to provide spectators an interesting game filled with healthy rivalry, and it is expected that this will encourage the players to learn not just how to play the game, but how to play in the spirit of the game and equip themselves to deal with both victory and defeat in the right manner.
