Situated close to the Mahaweli River in the Badulla district, Mahiyanganaya, is the next area that the ‘Get into Rugby’ programme covered.
Last week’s ‘Get into Rugby’ programme saw a massive attendance of over 520 school rugby players from 15 schools. Rugby is a whole new ball game to the kids in Mahiyanganaya as not many schools have a rugby team there. However, with the collective assistance of 28 coaches, the ‘Get into Rugby’ programme successfully introduced this wonderful game to not only the school students but also to the school teachers, who were educated with the basic knowledge of Rugby.
According to the plans of the SLR, as a follow up of the initial programme, an online exam which will test the Rugby knowledge of the teachers will be conducted in February 2019.
Organized by the national body, the programme is a part of World Rugby which is primarily intended to increase the sports’ reach internationally.
Organized with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education, the initiative in Sri Lanka is set to cover all of the educational zones in the country in order to introduce and nurture the sport. The first of its kind was held in the Polonnaruwa district with the most recent one in Mahiyanganaya last week.
The programme that started off in August this year is set to cover all 25 districts covering the 99 educational zones.
The ‘Get into Rugby’ programme laid the perfect foundation in reaching out and introducing rugby with the hopes of unleashing and finding potential talent in Mahiyanganaya which will undoubtedly support the sports growth in the years to come.
