Royal win 1st innings but Wesley retain Sir Frank Gunasekara shield

Royal College registered first innings points over Wesley in their drawn  U-19 inter-school cricket match at Campbel Park today. This Wesley-Royal encounter which is documented as one of the oldest fixtures is played for the Sir Frank Gunasekara trophy.

 By virtue of the fact that Wesley College won it outright last in 2012, they retain the trophy.

Resuming from their overnight score  of four for 74, Wesley College were bowled out for 183 runs in response to Royal’s 248 for nine declared.

Sachin Jayawardhane top scored for Wesley with a fighting half century,(52) and Samod Althulathmudali was four short of a well deserve half century as he departed for a well-made 46.

Chamika Karunaratne  (3 for 25) and Devind Pathmanathan (3 for 48) shared six wickets between them to help Royal gain a 65 runs first innings lead.

At stumps on day two, Royal were 172 for three wickets with Randev Pathirana hitting a top-score of 63. Toran Dhanapala was on unbeaten 38.

Royal in their first innings put on a decent batting performance thanks to an impressive 81 from Geeshath Panditharatne  while Randev Pathirana hit 43. Sachin Jayawardhane and Charith De Silva grabbed three wickets apiece.
