Royal College managed to record an emphatic win a short while ago against St. Anthony’s College Katugastota by an innings and 1 run in Katugastota today.
Royal College winning the toss elected to bat first after their fine batting performance in their previous outing against Ananda last week. The Royalist’s in their first innings could only manage to accumulate 168 runs in 32 over’s with their skipper Devind Padmanathan top scoring with an unbeaten 66* runs.
The skippers half ton came off just 43 balls and included 3 hits to the boundary and 6 sixes. It was an entertaining innings by the Royal College skipper whose knock ultimately proved to be a deciding factor on the outcome of the game.
Padmanathan managed to put on 36 for the 7th wicket with Chamika Karunaratne who scored 21 runs and 47 runs with all bowling all rounder Poorna Aluthge (15) which turned the tide in their favour. For the home team left arm leg spinner Sachin Bulathsinghala claimed 5 wickets for 47 runs.
With the momentum shifted towards Royal, they managed to skittle out their opponents for a measly 64 runs in just 24.2 over’s.
The Antonians could not defend the bowling of off spinner Poorna Aluthge who finished with impressive figures of 4/7. Medium pacer Anupa Thilakaratne rattled the Antonian top order grabbing 3 crucial wickets.
The Eagles were made to follow on and at the end of the 1st day the Antonians were struggling with 34 runs on the board and 4 batsmen back in the pavilion. Batting in their second innings they were battling for time, however the spin of Aluthge made sure that the Royalists recorded an emphatic win just on the stroke of lunch. The offie managed to capture a ‘fifer’ in the 2nd innings ending with a match bag of 9 for 36 runs. Skipper Devind Padmanathan after a superb feat with the bat continued to impress with a 3 wicket haul to claim a well deserved win for his team.
