Royal College, Colombo beat St Peter’s College, Negombo by a massive 110 runs, at Thurstan Grounds earlier today, to be crowned All Island U15 Division II champions.
Royal won the toss and elected to bat first. Bisandu Sadiv and Thewandu Senwaeera started off in a very attacking manner but after the opening blitz. they lost three quick wickets which reduced them to 51 for 3.
The boys from Negombo failed to build pressure and create inroads with the ball as the Royal College middle order chipped away to get easy runs. Middle order batsmen Resandu Thilakarathne and Sadeesha Rajapaksha controlled the innings perfectly and showed great composure.
Resandu top scored with 58 in just 67 balls while Sadeesha scored 48 off 56. The pair maintained a very healthy run rate while they were at the crease which ultimately took their team to a formidable 240 for 7 at the end of their innings.
With the ball for St Peter’s, Asitha Stevon and Dineth Thathsara took 2 wickets each but both of them were pretty expensive right through their spells.
St Peter’s came out to bat with a daunting task ahead of them. Their innings got off to a disappointing start as they lost 3 quick wickets for just 33 runs. It almost looked as if they were in a hurry to get those runs as the top order perished trying to up the ante early in the game.
Opening batsman Lasith Nisalka and Brian Julius resurrected the Peterite innings through a hard fought 45 run stand for the 4th wicket but the scoreboard pressure and some tight bowling from the Royalists saw them panic and breakdown in despair.
Lasith top scored with 39 runs before he was run out in the 32nd over. After the loss of the top 5 batters, their lower middle order had too much to do and were ultimately cleaned up for just 130 runs. Sadeesha was the pick of the bowlers for Royal College with 2 for 8 in his 6.5 overs.
