Only 53.2 overs were possible on day two of the 143rd Battle of the Blues cricket encounter between Royal College and S. Thomas’ College due to rain and bad light conditions on Friday at SSC Grounds.

After resuming day two from their overnight score of 207 for 6, the Thomians were bundled out for 242 at lunch. In reply, the Royalists were 136 for 4 when bad light brought a premature end to the day’s play.
The youngest son of former Sri Lanka seamer, Champaka Ramanayake – Sandesh, who had an erratic day one, bowled decently well, with pace on day two morning to remove the overnight batter Charuka Peiris for 51. Royal seamers made further inroads to the Thomian tail as Bulan Weerathunga removed Caniston Gunarathnam with a peach of a delivery.
Ramanayake picked up his second wicket of Akash Fernando, while the Royal captain Gishan Balasooriya ended the innings with the dismissal of Mahith Perera, who fought valiantly for 33 as S. Thomas’ added only 35 runs to their overnight score. Balasooriya ended with figures of 3 for 56 after bowling 31.2 overs.
Royal in their reply lost Sanvidu Senaratharachchi (1) and number three batter Sadisha Rajapaksa (5) early as seamer Kavindu Dias made the new Dukes ball talk on a lively SSC surface. However, Royal opener Sineth Jayawardene and number four batter Uvindu Weerasekara counter-attacked the Thomain bowlers with a fine 58-run stand in 48 balls for the third wicket.
Off-spinner Janindu Abeygunawardene removed Jayawardene 32 as Royal were 3 down for 73 at one stage. Vice-captain Dasis Manchanayake made 17 before being castled by Caniston Gunarathnam but the knock of the day came from Weerasekara’s bat as he remained unbeaten on 62 off 95 deliveries with 9 elegant fours.
