Rohan Abeykoon to head Sri Lanka Rugby selectors

With the term of the current national selectors coming to a conclusion, Sri Lanka Rugby has confirmed the services of four new national selectors under the direction of the Minister of Provincial Councils, Local Government and Sports Faiszer Musthapha.

The former Sri Lanka national sevens captain Rohan Abeykoon will assume duties as chairman of the national selectors and will continue term till 2019. A former Trinity College represent, he played his professional rugby at Kandy Sports Club and then later at CH & FC.

Abeykoon was also a part of the former national selectors that was headed by Michael Jayasekara and will look to do justice to the selection for the national sevens and fifteens format.

“I have been part of the selection process the last couple of years under Michael Jayasekera, I hope to continue on the same line where the best players will always be picked irrespective of their schools or clubs” added the newly appointed chairman Abeykoon.

The team of selectors will comprise of L. V. Ekanayake, Lt. Col. Kapila Knowlton, Leslie De Silva and Nishantha Chanaka.

The selection panel will have their work cut out for them when they will be entrusted with the task of choosing the Sri Lanka Under 20 national sevens squad ahead of the Asia Under 20 Sevens Series that will kick off on the 10th of August.

A former great from St. Anthony’s College, L. V. Ekanayake captained the side in 1981 before heading to CR & FC to play his professional rugby and was also a part of the earlier selectors structure.

The trio Lt. Col. Kapila Knowlton, Nishantha Chanaka and Leslie De Silva have represented the country at the highest level and will be looking to utilize that expertise when it comes to national calls with more than 6 major tournaments in the upcoming two years.
