Today, the 9th of April marks the first day of the much-anticipated 3rd Ritzbury Relay Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association, at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex. This event is a very popular one among young athletes, as it is a celebration of relays; the top runners of each school are chosen to represent their institution as a team, as opposed to the usual individualistic nature of the sport.
Over 3,000 athletes from more than 100 schools are expected to participate in this championship, and many of them entered the competition today, the first of three action-packed days.
In the lower age groups, there were victories seen all around. In the Women’s U-12 100m Relay event, the team from Colombo Yahalapath Eddera’s Kanyarama School emerged victorious. The Men’s event was won by the athletes from Migamuwa Maris Stella School.
In the Men’s U-20 200m Relay, the athletes from Migamuwa Maris Stella School also claimed victory, while the Women’s event was won by the team from Wattala Lyceum International School.
Similarly, it was their female counterparts from Wattala Lyceum International School that won the Women’s U-18 200m Relay. The Men’s event was won by the athletes from Colombo St. Benedict’s College.
The Men’s U-16 200m event was won by Migamuwa Maris Stella School, while the Women’s event was won by Walala A. Ratnayake College.
Finally, in the U-14 200M Relay, St. Benedicts College from Colombo 13 in the Men’s category emerged victorious, while Kothalawala M V- Kaduwela were the victors of the Women’s category.
