Red Star march on; Highlanders thump Dharga Town while Young Marians register win

344

The Division I Championship group stage is winding down towards its end with teams scrambling to qualify for the knockout stages.

Group A

One of the talking points of this year’s Division I Championship is Red Star; who are cruising along with four wins out of four. Furthermore they have scored 20 goals with an average of five goals per match and have kept clean sheets in all their matches.

Red Star hailing from Kalutara is coached by one of Kalutara’s favourite sons and Blue Star skipper Mohomed Ramees. They faced, what was billed as their toughest test so far in Cooray SC last week and walked away with a comfortable 3-0 win.

New Star; last year’s FA Cup pre-quarter finalists pummeled the struggling Maligawatte Youth 5-1. Maligawatte Youth are bottom of the table with no points having conceded 14 goals and only scored one. New Star would be fighting with Cooray SC for the second place finish in the group. Having already lost to Cooray it will be a tough ask as one of their final matches include Red Star, with Cooray SC’s final match against Maligawatte Youth.

Old Bens earned a hard fought 2-1 win over Badovita United during the week even though they were down to 10 men.
