Record equaling high jump feat powers Ushan to best athlete title

Maris Stella College athlete Ushan Thivanka produced this season’s best high jump performance in his age category as he cleared an impressive height of 2.10 metres to equal the meet record and clinch the best athlete title at the Western Province Schools Athletics Championships concluded at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Diyagama on Thursday.

Maris Stella College won the boys’ championship title beating St. Benedict’s College to the second place by a huge margin and Thivanka’s high jump feat in the Under-19 category and Venura Lakmal’s 22.21 seconds feat in the Under-21 age category were among some of the best feats in the boys segment.

Thivanka who was not fortunate enough to be selected for the IAAF World Youth Athletics Championship despite achieving qualifying standards, reached his personal best with the jump on Wednesday.

It was adjudged the best performance of the meet.

Sahan Thenuka Rajapaksa clocked an impressive 10.89 seconds to win the Under-17 boys’ 100 metres.

Emerging 100 metres sprinter Sahan Thenuka Rajapaksha of St. Benedict’s College clocked an impressive 10.89 seconds to establish a new meet record and claim the best athlete title in the Under-17 age category.

For St. Benedict’s, Rajapaksa’s 10.89 seconds feat, Supun Nimansa’s 49.04 seconds performance in the 400 metres and Avishka Dananjaya’s 14.93 seconds finish in the boys 110 metres hurdles were the most outstanding performances in individual events. They also established new meet records in 4×100 metres and 4×400 metres relays.

Western Province which is home to some of country’s leading athletes saw national record holder in women’s triple jump Vidusha Lakshani winning the best athlete title in the girls segment for a feat of 12.72 metres in the triple jump.

Ave Maris Convent, Negombo won the girls overall title while Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo and Newstead Girls’ School were the first and second runners up.
