Former Sri Lankan spin great Rangana Herath has been named the spin bowling coach of the New Zealand Men’s Cricket Team for their upcoming three Tests in Asia.
He will serve the Kiwis in their one-off Test against Afghanistan in Noida, followed by a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in Galle, starting on 18th September. This series is also part of the current ICC Test Championship cycle.

Herath finished his 19-year Test career with an impressive tally of 433 wickets and is regarded as one of the greatest left-arm spinners in the world. He previously worked as the spin bowling coach for Bangladesh for two years, starting in June 2021.
After Saqlain Mushtaq’s exit from the New Zealand spin coach role to join Pakistan, the opportunity opened up for Herath to step in.

The spin legend has fond memories of the historic venue in southern Sri Lanka, where he claimed over 100 Test wickets. His expertise will be invaluable for the likes of Mitchell Santner, Ajaz Patel, and Rachin Ravindra.

Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour will also join the Black Caps’ support staff for the Test against Afghanistan, scheduled from 9th to 13th September.
