Heavy showers throughout the day halted any chance of cricket on day 2 as Thurstan College had to be satisfied with a first-innings win over St. Joseph’s College in their under 19 division one encounter played at Thurstan grounds.
Thurstan skipper Thimira Jayasinghe won the toss of coin on day 1 and elected to field first. The home team’s bowling attack was all over the Josephians as the visitors collapsed at the hands of the Thurstan spin duo of Thimira Jayasinghe and Naveen Gunawardene. The Josephians were shut out for a mere 94 runs in their 1st innings with their opening batsman Sandaruwan Rodrigo being the only batsman to make a sizeable contribution of 48 runs. Left arm spinner Naveen captured 5 wickets for 21 runs while leg spinner Thimira Jayasinghe bagged 3 wickets.
Thurstan in their 1st innings were 144/7 in 49 overs when the play was stopped for stumps on day 1. Isuru Fernando top-scored for the home team with 30 runs while skipper Thimira Jayasinghe chipped in with 28 valuable runs.
