Rain disrupts DS Senanayake – Mahanama ‘Big Match’

221

Afternoon showers totally deprived any play in the latter stages on day one in the 9th Battle of the Golds between DS Senanayake College and Mahanama College at P. Sara Oval stadium which commenced on Friday.

Dons skipper Harith Maduwantha had no hesitation in batting first after winning the toss. Star opener Thimila Vidyasekara was sent back to the pavilion in the 2nd over by fast-bowler Niduka Welikala for no score. The Bandara brothers – Kavin and Uvin constructed a valuable 46-run stand for the 2nd wicket but younger brother, Kavin became Niduka’s 2nd victim after he made a 32-ball 29 which comprised 6 elegant fours.

Uvin Bandara failed to convert his good start into a big score when he was clean bowled by left-arm spinner Dulanjana Senevirathne for 34 in the 17th over as D.S Senanayake was restricted to 69 for 3 at one stage. Skipper Harith Maduwantha and experienced campaigner, Akeel Inham rebuilt the innings superbly as they produced a 78-run partnership for the 4th wicket. Right-handed Inham was unfortunate to be dismissed for 42 after batting 100 balls in the middle.

The stormy weather completely took center stage at P. Sara Oval around 2.00pm and since then no play was possible. When the match was called-off, D. S Senanayake College was 157 for 4 in 46 overs with skipper unbeaten on 41 and Shifran Muthalif not out on 8.

The match will be continued tomorrow.
