The Singer Schools Rugby League 2019 Division 1 Cup and Plate Championship officially came to a close last evening as Zahira College secured a convincing victory against Maliyadeva College at Maradana.
It was an unpredictable league right from the start as the Thomians’ defeated the Peterites, who later beat the Royalists, the team that went onto win the league beating St. Joseph’s, who were in turn the only unbeaten team in the 1st round!
In this rollercoaster ride of a tournament, the action in the Cup and Plate segments were nothing but enthralling – why? Because, it was a competitive race for both the league title and promotion to the top division. Whilst Royal, Joes and St. Peter’s battled it out for title glory, Dharmaraja, DS, Vidyartha and Zahira locked horns with the hopes of reserving their spot in the top tier. However, only one team clinched the title as another two earned a well-deserved promotion into the top 12.
After being pushed down to the Plate Championship in the 2nd Round of the league, Kingswood College was the first to secure their place back in the top 12, followed by St. Anthony’s who made sure they survived for yet another year. But, that wasn’t the case for the other two teams – Zahira and Maliyadeva College had a nightmare of a season which resulted in both teams facing relegation and opening the gates for high running Vidyartha and Dharmaraja College to fill in the top 4 after diminishing D. S. Senanayake College’s hopes of making it to the top tier.
The concluded league marked a significant victory for the whole of Kandy as the 2020 Singer Schools Rugby League will be the first time 5 Schools from the Hill Capital play in the top division.
