Sri Lanka Rugby Legend and Former Antonian Priyantha Ekanayake has been appointed as the new Chairman of the National Sports Council (NSC) by H.E. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
This appointment comes in weeks following his election as the President of the Country as H.E. and his Cabinet aims to clean Sports Association, implement systems for these Associations to be more productive as well set their sights on improving the high-performance aspect of sport.
Priyantha Ekanayake brings in a wealth of experience not only from on the field of Rugby, but Basketball as well as being the President of then known Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) and the Asian Rugby Football Union in 2006 and later as CEO of SLR in 2016.
He later went on to work as the CEO of Sri Lanka Baseball from 2018 to 2020.
During his playing days, Ekanayake is one of Sri Lanka’s most renowned rugby players, having played for CH & FC and captained CR & FC, Kandy Sports Club, and the national team as a second-row forward and number 8.
He is one of the few players to play rugby in New Zealand and Wales and he remain the only player to lead Sri Lanka in four consecutive Rugby Asiad’s from 1989 to 1992. During this time, he also represented the country at the Hong Kong Sevens as well. Another highlight of his career was captaining the Asian Barbarians, a prestigious invitation team composed of top players from across Asia.
