The semi-finals of the U20 Schools Football Championship 2024 is upon us, with familiar giants of the schools arena once again making it to the final four.
Defending champions Alighar National School from Eravur will face Hameed Al Husseinie College in the first semi-final while last year’s runners-up Zahira College will take on serial winners St. Joseph’s College in the other semi-final.
In the 2023 final, Alighar defeated Zahira 5-4 on penalties after it ended nil all at full time. St. Joseph’s were beaten by Alighar in the semi final but Joes have won the prestigious championship 2 of the last 4 times (2018 & 2022) and they were placed 3rd in 2019.
Zahira won it in 2019. 2020 & 2021 the tournament was not played due to COVID. From 2018 till 2022 the tournament was named ThePapare Football Championship.

For the 2024 edition, the top two of each of the 4 groups were selected to the Super 8 round where they were drawn into two groups. Alighar National School, Darussalaam College, St. Joseph’s and Kalutara Muslim Central College were drawn into Super 8 group A while Zahira College, Hameed Al Husseinie College, Al Falah College Negombo and St. Patrick’s College Jaffna made up group B.

- Alighar 3-2 Kalutara Muslim Central
- Joseph’s 1-1 Alighar
- Kalutara Muslim Central 0-7 Darussalaam
- Alighar 5-1 Darussalaam
- Joseph’s 1-0 Kalutara Muslim Central
Both Alighar and St. Joseph’s were tied for group top on points with a win, draw and a loss each. They were tied on head to head and on goal difference but Alighar managed to grab group top with a superior number of goals scored.

- Al Falah 0-3 Zahira
- Patrick’s 0-4 Hameed Al Husseinie
- Zahira 2-0 Hameed Al Husseinie
- Al Falah 3-2 Patrick’s
Having won all three of their games Zahira topped group B while Hameed Al Husseinie secured a semi final place after being placed 2nd.
As per the rules the semi-final match-ups see group A top Alighar National School v group B 2nd Hameed Al Husseinie College while group B top Zahira College taking on group A 2nd St. Joseph’s College.
