Richmond College, Galle clinched a thrilling final by three wickets against Thurstan College to win the second edition of the Mahinda Rajapaksa T20 triangular cricket tournament played at Thurstan ground.
Thurstan captain Ramidu Kumarasinghe opted to bat first after winning the toss in the final but restricted for a modest 132. The captain’s knock came off the bat of young Kumarasinghe as the left-hander blasted 43 balls 52 including five fours and one massive six while the right-hander Kavindu Kulasekara made a run-a-ball 38. Right-arm fast bowler Prabhan Nishantha picked up 3 wickets for 27 runs while the off-spinner A.K. Tyrone produced the same figures.
Richmond chasing an average target lost wickets at regular intervals. Kelum Nanayakkara top scored for Richmond with 38 runs in 34 balls and he was supported by Wanidu Hasaranga who added 20 runs for the visitors. On the other hand, the hosts were favourites to win the final when Richmond had to score 11 runs off the last over. Chamod Piyumal (18) who batted at number seven for Richmond however, had different ideas as he smashed two sixes in the last over to take the trophy to down south.
