Power-packed schools rugby weekend ahead – Week 2 Preview

1946

Schools Rugby is well under way. The rugby, the crowds and talent on show of Week 1 did not disappoint. What does week 2 have in store? Let’s find out.

8th March – St. Anthony’s College v St. Joseph’s College at Nittawela

St. Joseph’s College managed to get off to a winning start against Science College, however, a far from convincing display would have surely had the coach fine tuning plenty of areas in the past week before they make their way up to the Hill Capital.

On the contrary, St. Anthony’s College were in disarray. Their showing down at the park was disastrous. Their attack was malfunctioning and their defense was non-existent.

The Antonians will be aiming for a kick-start to their season and this will be a prime opportunity for them, having said that, the Josephians will surely not be wanting to drop a game this early on in the season.

What to expect

The Josephians will no doubt be aiming to be more ruthless and clinical when given the opportunity in the opposition red zone, while the Antonians will be seeking to put their attacking and defensive woes behind them as they go in search of their first win of the brand-new season.

9th March – Science College v Zahira College at Mount Lavinia

Both teams will be smarting after defeats in the first week, however, its everything to play for and this will be a game neither team would want to drop, as they fight for their lives to remain in the cup segment come round two.

Neither of them were able to get going in the first week of game and this will be a great opportunity to breath some life into their season.

What to expect

Running Rugby. Yes, you read it right! Running Rugby and Razzle-Dazzle is what would no doubt be on show. Playing at home, Science will be a tough test to pass for the lads from Maradana.

9th March – Kingswood College v St. Peter’s College at Nittawela

Kingswood got off to the best possible start, notching a win in their opener against Wesley to retain the L.E. Blaze Trophy.

St. Peter’s themselves were a conversion away from a similar start, but it wasn’t to be. They were dominant, however, failed to round off the win.

What to expect

They are both known for quick paced rugby. Both teams possess star players in their ranks. A game with pace would be on the cards. Expect Kingswood to hang in there, unsettle their opponent and to strike back. For the Peterites, they will surely go all out in search of their first win of the season.

10th March – Trinity College v Isipathana College at Pallekale

Another mouthwatering encounter, clash of the titans. Isipathana would surely be aiming to upset proceedings at Pallekale.

Both these teams got off to decent starts and registered their first wins of the season in week 1, however, early doors, one team will have a loss to their name, two weeks into their season.

With two of the most reputed coaches at the helm at both schools, neither will want to taste defeat this early on in the season.

What to expect

Isipathana will surely come out firing on all cylinders. The only way they are accustomed to play and with attack known as the best form of defense, Isipathana will come out all guns blazing. Same would apply for Trinity as following too far behind in this sort of fixture could prove costly. Expect more flashy play not only from one but both sides.

10th March – Maliyadeva College v Wesley College at Kurunegala

Both teams will be hurting after opening day losses, but this will be a golden opportunity for one team to get off the mark.

Maliyadeva got off to the worst possible start to life in the top flight, while Wesley were defeated in surprising fashion at Nittawela.

This will be the week of redemption for each team as they seek to get their season back on track.

What to expect

A safe performance will be what Maliyadeva will be hoping to put on while Wesley College will be playing for a win. The Les-blues will be aiming to play the hosts out of the game on their way to their first win
