Poor ground conditions and the downpour of rain prevented the Trinity Anthonian battle to progress forward on its first day as play ended with only 31 overs bowled proving a disappointment to the players and the spectators gathered.
The proceedings started off quite later than expected due to the pitch being wet as the Antonian batsmen came out to bat. The outfield had its moisture somewhat reduced and the Antonian batsmen were able to amass a total aggregate of 97 runs for the loss of three wickets. Steering the innings for the Antonians was Kanishka Uggalpaya who scored a quick 50 before being dismissed by Duvindu Tilekeratna.
With a ball to go in the 32nd over, the weather gods decided to spoil the atmosphere as a continuous downpour of rain spoilt proceedings. With play being temporarily halted, it seemed practically impossible for the game to resume even after the rains ceased. With a ground inspection done later on, both captains had to agree for play to be called off for the day.
Despite the clouds clearing up towards 2.00 p.m. it was disappointing to see play not being able to resume due to the prevalent wet pitch and outfield. Prior planning and proper usage of the covering material by the ground staff would have aided play to resume anytime later. The gathered crowd had to disperse as the official announcement came at 4.30 p.m.
Play will resume at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow.
