Police SC kicked off their second round campaign in the Plate segment in grand style as they managed to see off a hapless CH & FC side with a 65-19 victory at Police Park today.
Lahiru Gurusinghe turned out to be the star performer for Police SC with a brilliant display of rugby.
The home team drew first blood as Randith Warnapura barged over to give Police SC the early lead in the first five minutes of the game. After the bright start, Lahiru Gurusinghe scored the second try of the day to give his team a 12-0 lead very early in the game.
Gurusinghe scored his second try, having managed to beat the probing hands of around five CH defenders. Gurusinghe used sheer power and pace to get past the CH defensive line, as he added the extra points to give Police a strong foundation.
CH finally found solace in Prasad Perera who got the scoreboard ticking for his team for the first time. CH took advantage of a few penalties, and managed to break their way through. Prasad added the extra points to make it 19-07.
Police hit back almost immediately through captain Jeewan Amaradasa. The initial good work involved Gurusinghe again who had a daunting run through in the middle, and Police who weren’t shy in support managed to work the ball into the hands of the winger who made no mistake in scoring the fourth try for Police, also securing a bonus point.
Rasith Silva added another try for the home team just before half time, as Police SC led 31-07 at lemons.
Police continued with their momentum right from the start of the second half with another try to make it 36-07.
With the game slipping away, CH managed to peg one back as their forwards earned themselves a well deserved try as they managed to push forward to make it 36-12.
However, it continued to get tougher for CH as the star player for the Police, Rokobiau Nasoni blazed his way through to score his first of the game.
CH managed one more consolation try, this time it was Ratu who managed to break through a scrum using the blind side to good effect, and finally offloading to one of the supporting players. The scores read 41-19 at that point.
Police managed to score another four tries to seal the deal, with Apisala Naqalevu also getting on the score sheet. It was Pathum Liyanage and W. Godfrey who scored the previous two tries for CH in the second half. At full time the home team wrapped up a resounding 65-19 win to keep their Plate hopes very much alive.
