Plate Round Up – Wesley retain the Silverware and DS get the Ticket

240

The penultimate week of the Plate Championship concluded last week with the deciding encounter being worked off at CR & FC as Wesley College retained the silverware defeating St. Anthony’s College for the second successive time.

Retaining title holders tag, Wesley College portrayed that were worthier than the rest remaining unbeaten in the Plate segment after being demoted after the first round. The two undefeated teams in the tier, St. Anthony’s and Wesley College clashed last weekend in the final game of the season which looked to be a  recap of the last year’s decider.

After a close contest for almost 60 minutes, the Double blues surpassed the Eagles 26-20 as they bagged their fifth win in the segment and finished at the top spot.

The Plate runner-up St. Anthony’s College secured the second berth losing only a single game and will look forward to a probable retention in the first division next season.

The D.S. Senanayaka vs Prince of Wales clash turned tables around when D.S. Senanayaka College came on top of the lads from Moratuwa defeating them 46-27 after a tight first half. The Dons were unfortunate to miss out on the second spot when they secured equal points as the second runners-up St. Anthony’s College missing it by a difference of a try.

D.S. Senanayaka was trailing behind with seven tries over St. Anthony’s that eventually prevented them from getting the second position. Finishing at third, D.S. Senanayaka was successful to get their ticket to the top division after getting relegated in 2014. The Dons will look to start their 2016 season on a fresh note with the intentions of holding on to the top division spot.

With Dharmarja’s win against Thurstan College in the final week, they had the luck of creeping into the top four finishing fourth in the table. Dharmaraja had a total of 3 wins out of the 5 games they played thereby holding on to their position in the first division.

The four teams Wesley College, St. Anthony’s, D.S. Senanayaka and Dharmaraja College qualified for the first division in the upcoming season while CWW Kanangara who got the promotion ticket last season didn’t have the privilege of winning a single encounter in the entire year ending up at an overall fifth place. Zahira College who stole the spotlight in the first round didn’t seem to have the spark to take their good form to the second round winning only two games in the entire plate championship.
