“We immediately took him to the hospital and took a MRI scan. He is out of danger but we will continue to assess him for 24 hours.” Sri Lanka Cricket Physiotherapist Ranjith Nanayakkara said to ThePapare.com.
The incident happened when the Board XI off-spinner Nishan Peiris’ short-pitched delivery was smacked by England vice-captain Jos Buttler, who was batting on 44, and Nissanka was hit on the helmet while fielding at short-leg in the 56th over of England’s innings.

Buttler was dismissed as the ball ricocheted off Nissanka’s helmet to leg-slip fielder Angelo Mathews. With the accident occurring 10 minutes before the tea-break, the umpires decided to take an early tea and play resumed after the break as England went onto make 365 for 7 in reply to the home team’s score of 392/9 as both teams batted out 90 overs each.
