Five matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted today around the island.

Mahinda College, Galle vs De Mazenod College, Kandana

Mahinda College recorded a comprehensive 10 wicket victory over De Mazenod College in the Group D fixture between the two sides which concluded today at the Mahinda College Grounds. De Mazenod resumed day two on 44 for 1 wicket and managed to post 213 runs all out in their first innings.

After being asked to follow on, the lads from Kandana did not show an improved batting display in the second innings as they were bundled out for just 121 runs. Left arm fast bowler Pasan Pethangoda was the main destroyer with the ball for Mahinda College as he picked up 4 wickets for 49 runs.

Isipathana College, Colombo vs Maris Stella College, Negombo

Maris Stella College defeated Isipathana College by 10 wickets in their Group B fixture which concluded today at Katuneriya. The lads from Negombo resumed day two on 243 for 5 and posted a solid 360 all out in their first innings. Skipper Lasith Croospulle top scored with 74 runs while right handed batsmen Ravindu Fernando (61) and Roshen Fernando (57) chipped in with half-tons.

The Isipathana batters began their second innings 171 runs behind and were bowled out for just 182 runs while setting an easy target of 12 runs for Maris Stella College. Left arm spinner Pasindu Ushetti ripped through the Isipathana batting line up, picking up 7 wickets for 79 runs.

Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala vs St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy

The group D fixture between Maliyadeva College and St. Sylvester’s College concluded today at Pallekele Prison Grounds. The match ended as a draw but the crucial first innings points were won by St. Sylvester’s College. The lads from Kandy resumed day two on 129 for 4 wickets and only added another 97 runs to their overnight score.

The Maliyadeva batters showed an improved batting display in the second innings as they finished day two on 225 runs for 3 wickets. Chaluka Athapatthu top scored with 69 runs and Muditha Premadasa scored another half century (61*) in the match after scoring 63 runs in the first innings.

Trinity College, Kandy vs St. Thomas’ College, Matara

The Group A fixture between Trinity College and St. Thomas College concluded today at the Uyanwattha grounds. The match ended in a draw but Trinity College managed to get vital first innings points. After winning the toss, the Thomian skipper opted to field first and the decision paid off as they restricted a strong Trinity batting line up to 122 runs.

In reply, the lads from Matara also struggled to put a good score on the board as they were bundled out for just 119 runs. With first innings points in hand, the Trinitians began their second innings and declared at 201 runs for 6 wickets while setting a target of 205 runs for the Thomians to chase. They could only manage to post 111 runs for 6 wickets when umpires called stumps on day two.

Nalanda College, Colombo vs St. Servatius College, Matara

Nalanda College took major honors against St. Servatius College in their Group C fixture which commenced today at the Nalanda College grounds. After being asked to bat first, the Nalanda batters struggled to post a solid first innings score on the board as they were bowled out for 194 runs.

Left handed batsman Rusiru de Silva top scored with 56 runs not out while Pasindu Manupriya picked up 4 wickets for 62 runs for the lads from Matara. In reply, Servatius batters were struggling at 50 for 6 as umpires called stumps on day one.
