Pakistani leg-spinner Yasir Shah suspended for doping

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that Pakistan’s bowler Yasir Shah has been charged with an anti-doping rule violation under the ICC Anti-Doping Code.

The sample Yasir provided in an in-competition test, which was conducted on 13 November 2015 when Pakistan played England an ODI in Abu Dhabi, was found to contain the presence of chlortalidone, a Prohibited Substance which appears in Section 5 of the WADA Prohibited List (in the category of Specified Substances). In accordance with the ICC Anti-Doping Code, pending the outcome of the disciplinary process, Yasir has been provisionally suspended.

The matter will now be dealt with in accordance with the process set down in the Code, and until such time as the process is resolved, the ICC will make no further comment on this matter.

He became the quickest Pakistan bowler to 50 Test wickets, getting there in nine matches, while inspiring his side to a 2-1 series win in Sri Lanka with 24 wickets at 19.33.

He has spent nearly 13 years in first-class cricket, collecting almost 300 wickets before getting a Test chance, one of the many bowling prospects whose Pakistan career was held back by the success of Saeed Ajmal in the last five years.

Pakistan beat England 2-0 in the three-match series, with Yasir forced to miss the drawn opening Test in Abu Dhabi due to a back spasm. He returned in the second Test in Dubai and picked up eight important wickets to help Pakistan beat England by 178 run. He finished with 15 at 21.53, the leading wicket-taker on both sides
