Sri Lanka vs Pakistan - 2nd Test - Day 1

Pakistan dominated Day 1 of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka after bundling out the hosts for a mere 166 at SSC Grounds, Colombo on Monday.

Pakistan, in reply, finished the day on 145 for 2 after Abrar Ahmed and Naseem Shah shared 7 wickets amongst them in the first two sessions. Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique hit half-tons for the visitors. They batted with clear intent in taking on the bowling, as Shafique remained unbeaten on 74, along with Skipper Babar Azam (8*).

The hosts won the toss and opted to bat first on a dry SSC surface. They made two changes to their team, swapping the two seamers who played the first game – Kasun Rajitha and Vishwa Fernando – to include Asitha Fernando and debutant Dilshan Madushanka.

The left-arm seamer Madushanka became the 164th Test player for Sri Lanka. Fernando, who returned to the team, was the only successful bowler on Day 1 for Sri Lanka, picking both Imam ul-Haq and Shan Masood.

Sri Lanka’s miserable batting performance began when Shan Masood found Nishan Madushka short of his crease with a brilliant direct hit in the 3rd over of the match.

One-drop batter Kusal Mendis played a loose stroke, holing out to cover point as Shaheen Shah Afridi struck in his fourth over.

Naseem Shah tested Angelo Mathews with a cracking spell to eventually get the outside edge as the veteran Sri Lankan was dismissed for just 9 runs. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne chopped on onto the stumps as Sri Lanka were in dire straits at 36 for 4.

Dhananjaya De Silva and Dinesh Chandimal somewhat rescued the hosts with a gritty 85-run stand for the fifth wicket. However, after lunch, Chandimal fell to the short-ball trap.

Sadeera Samarawickrama’s woes against short-leg fielders continued as he perished off Abrar Ahmed without troubling the scores.

De Silva continued to play positively and looked the most settled batter for the hosts with a 68-ball 57, which had 9 fours and a six. However, he too played an irresponsible stroke, only to hole out in the deep.

Ahmed cleaned up the tail without much hassle as Sri Lanka recorded their lowest first innings total at SSC Grounds, which is hosting a Test match after a lapse of 5 years.

Pakistan are currently leading the two-match series, 1-0 having won the first game in Galle by 4 wickets.
