De Silva nears 10th Test ton but Pakistan take control in Galle

Pakistan Tour of Sri Lanka 2023

Dhananjaya de Silva remained not out on 94 at stumps on Day 1 of the 1st Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Galle.

The right-hander put together partnerships of 131 and 57 for the 5th and 6th wickets alongside Angelo Mathews and Sadeera Samarawickrama, but both Mathews and Samarawickrama fell on the stroke of Tea and Stumps respectively, putting Sri Lanka in a spot of bother at 242/6 at the end of the day’s play.

Things looked much worse for the hosts early in the day as they lost their 1st 4 wickets for just 54 runs, but the partnership between Mathews and DDS helped them to a strong position before the former was dismissed, nicking one to the keeper off Abrar Ahmed.

Shaheen Afridi was the man to deal most of the damage in the 1st session, returning to Test cricket for the 1st time since he sustained a knee injury at the same venue in July of last year.

Afridi picked up 3 of the 4 wickets to fall before lunch, the first of the day being Nishan Madushka, caught behind playing away from the body to give Afridi his 100th Test wicket.

Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis looked to be in decent touch, with the pair managing to find the boundary regularly before a heavy shower saw play halted for over an hour.

The break turned out to be a godsend for the visitors as Afridi and Naseem Shah bowled 8 and 9 overs respectively on the trot, accounting for 3 more wickets before Lunch was taken. Kusal Mendis nicked the first ball after the break through 3rd slip for four, but his luck ran out a couple of deliveries later as he was well caught by Agha Salman at 2nd slip.

Karunaratne was caught down the leg side off Afridi before Shah saw to the end of Dinesh Chandimal in the next over, once again caught at slip. The Sri Lankan camp would have had their hearts in their mouths when Shah struck Dhananjaya de Silva on the pads with the very next delivery, but fortunately, it turned out that de Silva had gotten a thick inside edge.

Mathews started shakily, but was as his resolute best once the spinners came on and he and De Silva looked set for big scores before he fell on the stroke of tea for 64.

Another rain delay saw another 18 overs lost (24), with De Silva and Samarawickrama coming out to face 7.4 overs late in the day.

While de Silva did the bulk of the scoring in his partnership with Mathews, Samarawickrama outscored him in their partnership of 57 but after surviving a probing spell by Afridi, he gave it away against the part-time spin of Agha Salman in the last over of the day – caught well by a leaping Imam Ul Haq at short leg.

With the loss of overs today, the game will begin 15 minutes early on day 2 – at 9.45 am – and will have an allotted number of 98 overs for the day.
