Agha Salman struck a fighting half-century for Pakistan, but the Sri Lankan bowlers picked up seven wickets on day two to give the control of the second Test match to the hosts at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on Monday.
Reporting from Galle
After bundling out the hosts to 378, Pakistan ended on 191 for 7 at close of play on day two. The visitors are still trailing by 187 runs. Earlier in the first session, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 378 as Naseem Shah and Yasir Shah claimed three wickets apiece. In reply, Pakistan were pegged back by the Sri Lankan bowlers as they picked up regular wickets. Ramesh Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya shared five wickets amongst them.
Pakistan lost their hero from the 1st Test, Abdullah Shafique for a second-ball duck as Asitha Fernando struck early for Sri Lanka. Right-handed Shafique played one onto the stumps to the joy of the hosts.
However, after the lunch break, Prabath Jayasuriya got the prized scalp of Babar Azam as the Pakistan captain chopped on onto the stumps for just 16 runs.

Opener Imam-Ul-Haq looked good in the middle during his 54-ball stay but left a sizeable gap in between the bat and pad as Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain Dhananjaya De Silva’s slow off-break delivery dipped and went onto with the arm to rattle the stumps.
Pakistan middle order bat and wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan played a Ramesh Mendis delivery on the backfoot and got himself trapped LBW for 24 as the visitors were 88 for 4 at one stage.
After the Tea break, Mendis struck twice to keep Pakistan at bay. Experienced Fawad Alam was trapped LBW and Mohammad Nawaz was caught behind as Pakistan were 145 for 6.
Right-handed Agha Salman, who made his Test debut in the first game, started off slow but as he got the hang of the pace and bounce of the surface, batted with authority. He made his maiden half-century but failed to see off the day when he was caught at first slip by Dhananjaya De Silva off Jayasuriya in the penultimate over of the day.

Earlier, after resuming day two on 315 for 6, the hosts lost debutant Dunith Wellalage early when he gloved a Naseem Shah bouncer to the slip cordon. Well-set Niroshan Dickwella was caught down the leg-side by Naseem Shah after reaching his 21st half-century.
Ramesh Mendis played a crucial hand with the tailenders to extend the score to 378 as Sri Lanka managed to add 63 runs on day two morning. Leg-spinner Yasir Shah trapped Prabath Jayasuriya for 4 and Mendis for 35.
Sri Lanka have only lost one Test match in Galle after accumulating 350+ runs for the first innings in the past.
